FLAMBOYANT FRIDA KAHLO: PAINT AN ARTWORK IN HER STYLE

This mixed media workshop lets you develop a version of her magical realist style. You can choose to paint a still life, self-portrait or her portrait with exotic elements meaningful to your story. Frida Kahlo loved bright colours, birds, monkeys and exotic settings. She also used symbolism to communicate her story.

Please note I have drawing aids, exercises and simple solutions for those who lack confidence or skill in drawing faces. Learn how to:

- sketch a recognisable face with appropriate proportions, mix skin tone colours

- select & use vibrant background & highlight colours to bring your painting to life

- add birds, animals, head-dress, jewellery or objects meaningful to your story

- get tips on how to address mistakes and make corrections on the go

Students will bring their own materials: paints [gouache or watercolour] You need a warm red, yellow and blue as well as a cool red, yellow or blue plus raw umber and yellow ochre for toning. Also brushes, palette, drawing paper: 3 sheets A4 size for sketches, pencil 2B, eraser, a sheet of A3 wet strength or watercolour paper (300gsm cold press(may be called NOT).
