AI SELF DEFENCE: A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

Tuesday October 20th, 5-6pm, Free but donations welcome

Description

Join Emma, an AI researcher and consultant for the UK Home Office, for a balanced exploration of artificial intelligence. Designed for complete beginners, this free talk offers an approachable, jargon-free introduction to AI.

Emma will demystify how the AI industry works and explain what staying safe in a world of AI actually means. She’ll cut through the hype, debunk common myths, and discuss the genuine risks and opportunities New Zealanders face. Through live demonstrations of voice and image deepfakes, she’ll explore how algorithms affect daily life—from data privacy and facial recognition to automated decision-making and job security. The focus is on practical empowerment, with simple tools you can use immediately, including adjusting privacy settings, basic cybersecurity habits, and critical-thinking checklists. You’ll gain a clearer understanding of the AI landscape and practical ways to learn more without spending hundreds of dollars.

The goal is simple: to help you feel more confident navigating our rapidly changing world, with a clear, grounded understanding of the technology.
