ART HISTORY: FRANCES HODGKINS

Across two illustrated talks, Jeanne Cooper explores Frances Hodgkins’ friendship with British artists Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines, who became close, lifelong friends and important figures in her later career. From their artistic circle at The Pound to the unconventional East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Benton End in Suffolk, Jeanne will trace Hodgkins’ move from watercolour towards oils and the bold, post-Impressionist style for which she is now best known. The talks will bring together the work of all three artists, exploring their friendships, shared influences and creative exchanges. Jeanne will also introduce Lucian Freud, the school’s teenage enfant terrible, who painted alongside Hodgkins before becoming one of Britain’s most celebrated artists.

Jeanne Cooper is a trained art historian, practising artist and art enthusiast. A familiar face at the CWEA, she has presented several talk series and participated in many classes and events over the years.
