AMAZING EVOLUTION: INCREDIBLE ADAPTATIONS

Starts 27 November

Description

Evolution has produced some extraordinary solutions to the challenges of survival. The grasshopper mouse, for example, is immune to the deadly venom of its scorpion prey — and turns that venom into a painkiller while it eats. Even more remarkably, a pain-free woman in Scotland shares some of the same genes.

Across two engaging talks, Simon will explore how animals and plants have evolved remarkable adaptations to survive, feed, defend themselves and reproduce. Discover the surprising connections between species, the role of natural selection, and what these adaptations can teach us about the living world.

No specialist knowledge is required. Come along with your curiosity and prepare to be amazed by the ingenuity of evolution.

Dr Simon Pollard is a spider biologist, award-winning natural history writer, photographer, and science communicator. He is an Adjunct Professor of Science Communication at the University of Canterbury and the author of numerous books on the natural world.
