ART HISTORY: FRIDA KALO & DIEGO RIVERA

Join Margaret for these two lectures: Week 1: Frida Kahlo: celebrated Mexican artist from “La Casa Azul” There are few artists with the level of recognition as that of Frida Kahlo whose face adorns countless t-shirts, bags, scarves and more. Her family house “La Casa Azul” is now a museum honouring both her artistic talent and commitment to Mexican identity and culture. When the Louvre purchased her work The Frame, she became the first Mexican artist to feature in their collection. Margaret will share Frida’s major works, the stories and meanings behind some of the symbolism they contain. Week 2: Diego Rivera: Mexican Muralist who depicted Social Reality Mexican Muralist Diego Rivera captured issues about Mexican society and the Mexican Revolution of 1910. His success in Mexico inspired President Roosevelt and led to multiple US based commissions. His pivotal relationship with Frida Kahlo (whom he married) and its contribution to her success in what was still a man’s world, will also be uncovered. Creative Director of Art Grooves, Margaret Taylor graduated from The Learning Connexion (Diploma in Art & Creativity) 12 years ago. Then ran a popular art education programme for Karori Arts & Crafts for over 8 years. More recently she ran the successful Hundertwasser Art Workshops.
