CAPITALS OF NORTHERN(ISH) EUROPE

Capital cities often tell micro-versions of national history. Why chosen, when built, for what purpose and how the city shaped and was shaped by historical events. In this new course we consider the founding, construction and history of Northern Europe. Most of the cities we will explore are based around the Baltic Sea region with long histories of major port-cities fuelling both war and trade. From Scandinavia, across the Baltic States and around to Germany, we will even double dip into Russia.

Michael Couch has been teaching community education courses for over a decade. With an academic background in Philosophy, Classical Studies, Education and History, Michael recently completed his PhD in the History of Philosophy of Education in New Zealand. He enjoys learning new topics and incorporates passion and wry humour into all the courses he teaches.
