HISTORY OF JAPAN
Starts, 14th October, 12.30-2.30
Description
Samurai, Ninja, Godzilla, Tsunami, Sushi, Nuclear bombs, Uniformity, Punctuality, Shrines, and Anime. For many people Japan is understood through a series of clichés rather than an appreciation of thousands of years of nearly unique complex development. This lecture series will explore Japan's history - from religion and geography, to war and peace, to the origin of many of these stereotypes and the nature of being an island nation on the edge of a region historically dominated by its East Asian cousins.
