Say No to the Treaty Principles Bill: Submission Writing Workshop

Sunday 15th December

Description

We’re pretty keen on living in a world where kotahitanga (unity) is a thing. Join us for this submission writing party to state your opposition to the Treaty Principles Bill.  Together, we’ll craft submissions in support of upholding the mana of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, rights of Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti (that’s all of us!) and send in our stories to the Justice Select Committee.

This issue transcends political party lines. We’re inviting Green Party, Labour, Te Pāti Māori and National MPs and supporters to this event.

When: 1.30 - 3.30pm on Sunday 15th December 2024

Where: Canterbury Workers Education Association (CWEA) hall, 59 Gloucester St, Christchurch 8013

Who: Anyone who cares about the issue and wants to hang out with others who also do

What: We’ll open with guest speakers to give some background and context, then do some activities to channel our energy into effective action. Bring a device if you can, and let us know if you can’t so we have enough spares.

Accessibility: the venue has step-free access, open-gender accessible bathroom and windows for ventilation. Please wear a mask if you can.

All are welcome—no formal experience needed!

 Why this matters:

Recently, tens of thousands of people came together from across the motu and marched to Parliament in a powerful hīkoi, voicing their opposition and calling for justice.

The Treaty Principles Bill undermines Tangata Whenua and the principles of partnership, participation and protection at the heart of Aotearoa. Submissions are open until 7 January so now's the time to make sure your voice is heard.

Submissions go to a Select Committee who consider the feedback and make recommendations on the Bill to the Government. This is one of the key ways that we can have a say and encourage the Committee to chuck the Bill out.
