Diane will show you how she makes beautiful handmade books for family keepsakes using what she has around the house: recycled cardboard e.g. packets and cartons, scraps of sewing material, furnishing stuff, wallpaper and other used and unused paper. For tiny books for kids she also use felts pens, paint, just the primary colours and perhaps coloured pencils. A computer printer is useful for reducing, enlarging and photocopying.

Sign up to this course and you will be sent emails for three weeks with instructions and photographs to take you through the process of creating the pages, making and lining the covers and stitching and pasting your books together. Diane will show different techniques for making a simple fold out book for children and books with multiple leaves stitched together, as well as different styles of covers. You will also get tips on drawing and writing in your handmade books and a recipe for making the best flour and water paste.

Diane was formerly an HoD of Art and Art History in Christchurch High Schools and an Education Officer at the Christchurch Art Gallery where she guides and occasionally teaches.
