Olivia Spencer Bower (1905-1982)


Olivia Spencer Bower was one of the most engaging and best loved artists of her generation. In this course, we will look at her life and work, connections with fellow painters, and the ongoing legacy of the Olivia Bower Foundation Art Award. The talk will conclude with a discussion of her place in the larger picture in the twentieth century New Zealand. This course will include a visit to 'Views from the Mainland', an exhibition featuring a selection of her South Island works drawn from the collection of Christchurch Art Gallery.
